The 5th Philosophical Pictures: International Philosophy Film Festival
Film-and-Philosophy Workshop "Philosophical Pictures' Laboratory" – East/West
21–23 May 2010 and 9–12 December 2010 Kraków
This year the path of the Philosophy Film Festival leads towards East. We invite you to become acquainted with the Festival programme, which will make you acquainted with selected eastern cinematographic productions, but above all will show the wealth of philosophy of eastern countries within European and world cinema.
We will have an opportunity to compare cinema which is rooted in western culture with selected cinematographies of Middle and Far East.
The films which we would like to show you and discuss with you offer many interesting answers to the question of the possible East/West meeting. Many inspiring questions emerge, such as: “Is our understanding of the East superficial”? “Is better mutual understanding possible, considering geographical distance and different mentality? “
We will address such themes, as the philosophy of subject in eastern and western traditions, the issues of spiritual development in the context of eastern philosophies, Zen Buddhism influences in the avant-garde cinema and the understanding of the concept of freedom in Yoga traditions.
This year’s festival will have two editions: May and December 2010.
On 21–23 May 2010 the ”Cinematographic Laboratory” will be held – an international workshop which will be an opportunity for Kraków audiences to meet with film-makers and artists who will address the theme of East meeting West in the cultural arena. Thanks to their original perception of mutual relations and comments which accompany them emerging mutual influence of cultures of East and West will be revealed in new contexts.
We hope the Festival meetings will offer the participants opportunities to take interest in the fascinating cultural and philosophical areas, while at the same time stimulating in-depth reflection on eastern thought and its impact on the western people.
Meetings and discussions will be held in thematic blocks devoted to the following cinematographies:
- in May – Iranian, Japanese and Georgian; a concert by a Georgian musician will be an extra treat;
- in December – Indian, Israeli, European (including Polish) and the follow-up of Japanese and Iranian cinematic productions. In addition an evening of poetry and music inspired by mystical poetry and philosophy of Dzhalaloddin Rumio will be organised.
A lot of misconceptions and stereotypes have been involved when dealing with the philosophy of the East. We would like to discuss these with prominent academics and cinema personages for whom cinematic art can be a medium to carry a message of a better understanding of the world’s multiculturality.
